The iShares FTSE NAREIT Mortgage REITs Index Fund (Ticker: REM) seeks investment results that correspond generally to the performance, before fees and expenses, of the FTSE NAREIT Mortgage REITs Index. The index measures the performance of the residential and commercial mortgage real estate sector of the United States equity market. Index components are selected from the FTSE NAREIT Composite REIT Index. Outstanding shares will be adjusted for any free float restrictions in accordance with FTSE standard practice. The initial weighting of a constituent in the index will be applied in the following bands: a) free float less and or equal to 15% = ineligible b) free float greater than 15% = 20% c) free float greater than 20% = 30% d) free float greater than 30% = 40% e) free float greater than 40% = 50% f) free float greater than 50% = 75% g) free float greater than 75% = 100%. The annual index review is in December. Rebalancing, inclusion of IPOs or companies that elect REIT status will be considered on a quarterly basis. A REIT is a company that owns, and in most cases, operates income-producing real estate such as apartments, shopping centers, offices, hotels and warehouses. Some REITs also engage in financing real estate. To qualify as a REIT, a company must distribute at least 90 percent of its taxable income to its shareholders annually. NAREIT is the National Association of Real Estate Investment Trusts. It is the trade association for REITs and publicly traded real estate companies with an interest in the US property and investment markets.
