Barclays Global Launches Niche Commodity ETNs
June 27, 2008

SAN DIEGO - (ETFguide.com) - After launching 4 ETFs on Wednesday, Barclays Global launched 11 new Exchange Traded Notes (ETNs) through its iPaths lineup.

10 of the notes are fairly standard and carve out the Dow-Jones AIG Commodity Index – Total Return into sub-sectors.

One new ETN is truly unique. There must be a number of other issuers green of envy for having missed the chance of first mover status on the first carbon emissions tracking exchange traded product.

Global warming is becoming more and more of an issue for investors and producing companies alike. One component of the international response to the rise in atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations has been the implementation of national and international programs designed to reduce GHG emissions on a global scale.

Standards in the form of Carbon emission credits were established and designed to limit and reduce pollution. These credits are traded by companies who get tax breaks and various incentives for lowering pollution.

Unused credits are as good as cash and can be sold. This market might be worth in excess of $50 billion a year. Investors now can participate in this unique market place via the iPath Global Carbon ETN
