Understanding ETF Tables in the Newspaper

Tables for exchange-traded funds appear in most major daily and weekly newspapers. In many cases, ETF tables can be found near the mutual fund tables, or under "exchange-traded portfolios" using the Wall Street Journal or Barron's. Some periodicals will list and group ETFs under the respective stock exchange where they trade. The majority of U.S. listed ETFs are traded on the American Stock Exchange. Some ETFs are also listed on the New York Stock Exchange and NASDAQ.

In FIGURE 1 we've listed an example of how newspapers typically arrange ETF data. The information listed below does not necessarily represent actual performance, dividend, and expense ratio information for the funds listed. Rather, it illustrates a sample of how newspaper tables list and identify key ETF data. A short explanation of each data point is given to help improve your understanding.
